STEPPING BACK

Monday, October 29, 2012

This last week, I've been thinking a lot about stuff. You know, life stuff: stress and workload and goals and purpose and spirituality and relationships. And all this thinking has lead me to a realization... I think I've got too much on my plate.

I've always had this problem. I'm an overachiever and a perfectionist so I usually bite off more than I can chew. We all know where that leads - I can never be "great" at anything because I'm barely keeping my head above water.

Right now I'm working two jobs, trying (and failing) at writing daily posts for this blog, feeling guilty about not putting more time into my Etsy shop, and having serious issues with maintaining a social life. I've got zero free time to pursue the things I want - like writing or reading or painting. That makes me sad.

Over a year ago, this blog started as a way for me to chronicle my new life with Zach... mainly for my family and close friends. Somewhere along the way though, I decided I wanted to make it into something more and it became a lot more work. Now, it's become an extra burden on top of an already stressful life.

So, I think I'm going to take some of the pressure off myself for a while. I still love this blog - and I don't want it to die! But, I think in the next few weeks, it'll probably morph back into what it was originally: a place to update my loved ones.

If you're only here for the inspiration, hopefully I can make it up to you. I recently launched a tumblr site as a way to collect images I like (but that didn't seem to quite fit into my Pinterest.) That site is all photos - no words. So, if you just want to look at pretty pictures for a while (sometimes we just need that!) it's probably a good place to start.

Blessings. xoxo

THIS WEEK

Friday, October 26, 2012

Our LA weather is finally starting to cool down... and my mornings have been filled with cold toes, black tea, and Miles Davis. But even though I just want to hybernate for the next 4 months, Zach and I have been keeping ourselves busy. This week, we did everything from roller skating (which I'm hoping becomes a regular activity) to eating a whole meal of pumpkin-inspired foods. We've even become quite the concert junkies: last night breaking our "in-bed-by-10:30" rule to see Paper Route at the Bootleg Theater.

It's also been a week of dreaming, scheming, and planning for the future. Again, I've been feeling so incredibly lucky/blessed/thankful to have married the man I did. I've never really liked calling anyone my "best friend" (titles are too exclusive,) but Zach is by far the best friend I've ever had. And, that makes marriage so so so so fun.

I also can't believe that Halloween is already next week! We're still trying to finalize our costumes (and by finalize, I mean we haven't even started thinking about them yet.) Do you have any fun plans? If you live in LA, I highly recommend seeing The Nightmare Before Christmas (in 4D!) at the El Capitan Theater. Make sure you show up a little early so you can catch the parade of oddly dressed folks on Hollywood Blvd.

Happy Friday! xoxo

8 HOURS

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

I married a night owl. For some reason, Zach doesn't need as much sleep as the rest of humanity. He can stay up all night and function perfectly well the next morning.  I don't know about you other ladies out there, but I feel funny going to bed without my man beside me. So, more often than not, I end up staying awake with him.

Lately though, I've noticed I've started having more sleep problems. And, I'm thinking that some of it is due to our crazy sleep schedule. So, we're trying to get better about going to bed at a reasonable time... no matter if it's a weekday, weekend, or holiday. Our current plan? Electronics off at 10:30, in bed by 11. We've only be doing this for about a week, but I think it's already helping. I've been waking up fewer times, I've had less trouble getting to sleep, and I feel waaaaaay more rested in the morning. It's funny how predictable our bodies are.

What about you? Was it hard adjusting to a new sleep schedule with your partner? Have you ever had sleep problems? What seems to help?

PS - I don't think I'd have any trouble falling asleep in one of these beds...

(AFTER) CHRISTMAS IN AUSTRIA

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Well, if all goes according to plan, Zach will be breaking out his lederhosen this winter. What started as my brother's whim a few weeks ago has turned into an all-out family vacation in Austria. And come December 26, Zach and I will be meeting my parents and brother in the Alps.

Apparently, Christmastime in Salzburg is magical.  I know it's perfect for winter sports and that The Sound of Music was filmed there... but other than that, I really don't know much about the city. Have any of you been there? Anything we just can't miss? I can't believe we'll be leaving two months from now!

WOULD YOU OR WOULDN'T YOU?

I'm still trying to decide how I want to decorate our bedroom... Lately? I've been thinking polka dot walls might be cool.

I'd keep it simple: white walls, black dots. But, wouldn't it be interesting to add in a bright colored ceiling?

WINTER WHITE

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

There are a few fall trends that I just can't get out of my head. I've been seeing them everywhere, and I want them in my closet now.  Not only do I love the idea of white in winter, but I also love backpacks, corduroy, booties, sweaters, collars, and shorts (with tights!) in that color.

Agree?

THE FAIRFAX DISTRICT

Monday, October 15, 2012

For a long time now, it's been my dream to consolidate our life. In a perfect world, Zach and I would live in a community where we could walk everywhere: to work, to get our groceries, to go shopping, to eat... I always thought this wouldn't be possible unless we were living in a city like New York - with great public transportation. But, last week I had a revelation. We're kind of doing it now.

Zach still has to drive to work every morning. But, other than that, for the past 2 months we've been operating (for the most part) within a 2 mile radius. And, I've been taking for granted the amazing places we wander to frequently.

So, in case you ever find yourself in our neighborhood, I thought I'd share some of our favorite haunts. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

HAPPY FRIDAY.

Friday, October 12, 2012

Finally. Finally. It finally feels like fall has arrived in Los Angeles. The seasonal pumpkin stuff is available at Trader Joes, autumn themed decorations now fill up my mantel, we had a little rainstorm this week, and I can't seem to keep any carbs away from my mouth. Yep, fall is here.

I'm in denial that the temperature is supposed to jump back up to 90+ this weekend. So, I'm still planning on making soup for dinner and wearing socks around the house. We've also got date night, brunch, and book club planned.

What about you? Doing anything fun this weekend?

Whatever your plans, here are a fun few links to keep you entertained until Monday:

Lisa Frank was a prophet.
The opening of The Simpson... with real actors.
Did you see that Zara makes home stuff now?!
Who else thinks that Election Day should be a national holiday?
The perfect holiday accessory (and I promise this isn't the bias talking.)
Really excited for this new record.
He's seriously crazy.
I don't know, is this cool enough to put in our living room?
Are you a social media addict? If so, what kind are you?
Missed the VP debate, but want to talk about it with friends? Here. (You're welcome.)

... AAAAAAND, WE'RE BACK.

Monday, October 8, 2012

After a quick surprise visit to see my family up in Portland this weekend, Zach and I are now back in L.A. So, although I've been a little MIA for the last few days, I'm kinda hoping to spend a little more time on the blog this week. We'll see... with plans to see Pitch Perfect tonight, a coffee date tomorrow, and friends visiting on Wednesday, I'm not sure how successful my blogging goals will actually be.

Happy Monday!

HALLOWEEN COSTUME IDEAS

Tuesday, October 2, 2012

Every year at the beginning of October, I start getting anxious. It's time to start thinking about Halloween costume ideas, and I never know what to be. Well, actually, I take that back... I always have some grandiose scheme of what I could be. But, when push comes to shove, I'm usually left scrambling to come up with something (anything!) at the last minute.

I figure I'm not alone in this, so I thought I'd share a few of the simple Halloween costume ideas I use in a pinch.

First up, quite possibly the easiest and most comfortable costume you'll could ever wear: a robe, slippers, and (if you're feeling adventurous) a bowl of cereal. Tell your friends that you're "a lazy person, obviously." (Because, you know, all lazy people wear robes and slippers and eat cereal all the time.)

I stole this idea from Zach's sister Kara. She and her husband Tim came dressed in this getup at our Halloween party last year. Being a self-proclaimed lazy person myself, I was instantly attracted to the low levels of effort required to put this outfit together. You can basically wear your most comfortable Saturday morning PJs and call it a costume. That's pretty perfect in my book.

Each week until Halloween, I'll be sharing more costume ideas (most of them being very low-effort... let's keep things simple, OK?) So, make sure you stay tuned!

OCTOBER (A PLAYLIST)

Monday, October 1, 2012

If you read this blog somewhat regularly, you know I get super sappy during the fall. (What? It's my favorite season.) And, sometimes a good playlist can provide the perfect soundtrack for the way I'm feeling. I don't claim to be any kind of music expert, but I know what I like... and the songs below are making me happy right now.

What about you? What are you listening to this month?

1. The Waiting - Angel Olsen
2. What's Wrong - Grizzly Bear
3. Quelqu'un M'a Dit - Carla Bruni
4. Don't Leave Me - Regina Spektor
5. The Dangling Conversation - Simon and Garfunkel
6. You Make My Dreams - Hall and Oates
7. Fall of '82 - The Shins (Seeing them in concert tomorrow!)
8. Sunday Kind of Love - Etta James
9. Girl With the Red Balloon - The Civil Wars
10. Dream a Little Dream of Me - Ella Fitzgerald & Louie Armstrong
11. Makin' Believe - Dolly Parton
12. Sweet Talk - Jessie Ware

PUMPKIN (+)

Yep. I'm still complaining about the heat. But, it's not just me. At this point, everyone in the city is really grumpy. Everywhere I go, it's the first topic of conversation - and everyone's trying to "story top" each other. (You know: "Oh, you think that's bad? Well, my house is so hot that the fridge spontaneously combusted. Seriously.")

But today's the first day of October. And, even though it's supposed to be 100+ degrees, I'm itching to start pulling out all my favorite pumpkin recipes. I mean, it has to cool down sometime, right?
