GOING ALL NATURAL

Monday, September 10, 2012

Here's a fact: I've struggled with bad skin since puberty. Besides accutane (the mother of all acne drugs), I've also tried every pill, cream and ointment invented by dermatologists. Trust me, it ain't always pretty, folks.

I hate, hate, hate putting all these chemicals into or onto my body, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of other options. Well, until I read this article. A normal gal with bad skin (not a scientist or doctor, for the record) tried to clear up her face by only using things she could also eat (like honey, olive oil, coffee grounds, egg whites, vodka, etc.)... and it's working for her.

So, I'm considering doing the same. Maybe for a week? Or a month? Just to see if it helps at all. But, what do you think? Am I completely crazy? Or, should I go for it? Thoughts appreciated. :)

  1. I've been doing all that, honey, eggs, coffee, sugar, lemon, yogurt, fruits, you name it.. except vodka, though it's not the first time I hear about its cosmetic purpose.. I didn't do it on constant basis, so I can't swear on the results, but it can't be worse that all the chemicals, so I'd go for it (and actually I am going for it)

    1. Well, I don't think I follow specific recipes.. I scrub my face with sugar or coffee sometimes, I make hair masks with egg (just the yellow part) and olive oil and a bit of honey (vitamin A and E capsules would help, or so I've heard, but I usually don't have them in the house).. or simply mash fruits and put them on my face.. my skin is relatively dry, so I just google recipes for my skin type.

She seems to have lots of DIYs here: http://ellesees.blogspot.fi/

  2. i had really really terrible acne when i came back from studying abroad. it was horrible and they were afraid it would scar, so they put me on birth control (which i didn't want to do). i couldn't do accutane because my skin is already too dry. then my mom got me this stuff from the dead sea (you have to get the real stuff, some products say they are but they're not really). it's called AHAVA. it worked for me - i used the cleanser, toner, and lotion. it felt really good and after a few months, my skin was WAY better! don't know if it will work for you, but thought i'd share :)

    2. sorry it took me so long to reply! i bought it online because you get a better deal and i never looked at it in the stores. the only thing is that you have to make sure it is the AHAVA brand and not a knock-off brand that claims they use dead sea stuff.

  3. Do it!! After college I started breaking out 1-2 times a year.. I'd always end up at the Dr's; end up getting topical creams or antibiotics. It'd clear up for 6-9 months, and then it'd come back.

During my last breakout when I was getting ready to make my trek back to the doc's a friend told me about using olive oil with tea tree oil on her skin... I thought it sounded horrible, the idea almost repulsed me (more oil on my zitty skin?). But, I was in the same boat as you; I hate the idea of putting all that medication in my body to deal w/ acne.. So I tried it, and it worked so well! I ended up using the olive oil/tea tree oil mix at night and using a brown sugar scrub w/ sesame seed oil in the morning. I bought everything I needed at the grocery store. I've been super happy and haven't had to deal with acne in awhile. It also makes me skin glow AND it makes me super happy to get away from the drugs.

    Try it out!

    1. I'm totally going to try this. Where do you get tea tree oil? (Is that a silly questions?) I'm also worried about putting oil back on my skin, it seems so counter-productive! But, so many people have said it works... I'll trust you!

    2. Sorry I didn't look at this until now. You can pick tea tree oil up at most whole foods stores. I've seen it at Earth Fare here in Georgia (not sure if they have stores on the West Coast. Amazon also has tea tree oil.
