12 Miles & Counting

Monday, August 27, 2012

I knew that marrying a backpacker would mean that I would one day have to tag along on a trip. Despite my lack of backpacking skills, I was convinced that I could handle anything. I mean, how hard could it be?

But, when a huge REI box holding a women's backpack appeared on our front porch, I seriously had a full-fledged panic attack. The thought of being alone in the wilderness at night, close to mountain lions and bears, without toilets or clean water, and with a 40 pound bag on my back was overwhelming (to say the least.) Also, don't you have to be semi in-shape to backpack? I like to run, but those 3 mile jogs each week probably aren't cutting it.

To calm my anxiety, I made Zach promise that we'd take a practice hike before we actually went somewhere overnight.

So yesterday, we found ourselves "practicing" for 12 miles up Santa Anita Canyon.

It was.... exhausting. And today, I'm super-sore (in places I didn't even know existed.)

But (and am I really going to say this?) it was also pretty fun. The scenery was stunning, Zach was great company, and I learned I'm a lot stronger than I thought I was. I'm really glad we did it.

I'm starting to feel a lot better about our first overnight trip. Which, by the way, is next weekend (eeep!)

Any tips/tricks/suggestions for me before we go?

This Week...

Friday, August 24, 2012

... has been a tough one.

After a season of extreme tranquility, I've suddenly been thrust into a whole new world of stress. I should first clarify that I'm not upset about this change. In fact, I L.O.V.E. it. I'm super excited about the new projects I'm working on. But, there's just a lot on my plate right now and I'm still trying to figure out how to balance it all (so if you know any good balancing tricks, I'd love to hear them!) Oh, and if I haven't texted, emailed, or messaged you back yet... I'm sorry. Please accept this blanket apology for now.

Other than that though, our week has been lovely. I made (evil) cookies that must be eaten in batches of 6 (it's a requirement, and that's why they're evil.) I sampled some new tattoos from Tattly. I wore my new flea market dress. And, I found the recipe for the best salad you'll ever have. Period.

Tonight I'm looking forward to doing nothing... a silly movie and some popcorn sound wonderful. How about you?

Favorite Places // Sprinkles Ice Cream

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

When we moved into our current apartment, our landlord joked with us: "If you move this far west (into LA proper), you'll never want to drive east (towards Pasadena) again." And in some ways he was right. With little access to freeways, and everything we need within a mile of our house, there's little reason for us to leave our little cocoon. (I've come to understand how some women become "old cat ladies.")

Still, I can't complain. We live in one of the most vibrant cities in America... with some of the most amazing restaurants, parks, and activities right around the corner from our apartment. So, instead of keeping all this knowledge to myself, I thought I'd start sharing some of my favorite LA spaces and places. (Hopefully it'll be enough to make you come visit me!)

Let's start with Sprinkles.

Sprinkles is one of those places I love/hate. They're known for their amazing cupcakes (and cupcake ATM!), and when they added ice cream to the repertoire they reached a whole never level. It's in beautiful (and safe) part of town, it's close to our house, and their desserts are incredible. There's really nothing to complain about... except those bus-loads of tourists that happen to arrive (and get in line ahead of us) each time we visit. (We've seriously become the most crotchety old people complaining about those "damn tourists.")

Still,  their red velvet cones are almost too good to be true. And, despite the few negatives, we just seem to keep coming back for more...

Yea, ok. You should still try it out, even if you have to wait in line for a while. It's good enough, I promise.

A Seriously Beautiful Summer Wedding

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Remember that wedding we went to last month? I thought you might like to see some of their photographer's final photos. (I can't stop staring.) We've got some good lookin' people in our family.

WEAR IT // Night Time Sequins

Monday, August 20, 2012

A few weeks ago, I found a sequin-covered shirt at Crossroads in Seattle. It was love at first sight (obviously.)

I've been trying to wear it whenever possible... but, with this ridiculous heat (which just won't go away!) I can only seem to make it happen in the evenings, after things cool down.

Is it weird to take night walks around your neighborhood in sparkles and heels?

I like pairing pretty, feminine pieces with harsher fabrics. I found these thick, combat-esque, super tapered, olive green pants for $2 at a thrift store this week. They look like something my mom would've worn in the 80's.... and then burned because they're so horrible. But, for some weird reason, I love 'em.

Then, I found some white confetti shoe clips at the Rose Bowl Flea Market last weekend. They're perfection. I literally added them to every pair of shoes I wore this entire week. (Seriously, who wouldn't want to walk around with a party on their feet?)

The weather people keep promising that this heat wave's gonna end soon. But, I think we're stuck with miserable temps until the middle of October. Until then, my neighbors will be the only people with the pleasure of seeing my favorite cooler-weather outfits. (Well, and you, of course.)

Celebrating Today

Happy National Thrift Store Day!

I'm new to thrifting, but I'm glad to see there's a whole holiday dedicated to my new favorite sport. After overcoming a fear of wearing other people's clothes, I can now say that a large chunk of my wardrobe was found at local second-hand shops (for a fraction of the original price.)

So, we all know where I'll be today...

See some of my thrift-store inspired outfits here, here, here, here and here.

About Food

For the past 2 months, Zach and I have been on a health kick. Well, I should clarify: I do most of the grocery shopping, so Zach doesn't have much of a say (muahah!) And, it's not really a "health kick," it's probably more of a "whole foods" kick. More and more, I've been trying to remove processed foods from our diet.

So, we've been eating less frozen meals, and granola bars, and mac'n'cheese, and pasta and replacing them all with natural (and organic) substitutes. It makes life a little more difficult (since everything's fresh, I'm cooking without any shortcuts) and it's more expensive. But, it feels good to know we're not ingesting as many harmful chemicals. As long as it comes from nature (to clarify, a plant in nature,) I don't think we can go wrong.

Sprouted Kitchen has been a life saver. Her recipes have become a weekly staple around our house (I think I've made the Mushroom & Poblano Tart three times already.) But, we also juice our veggies every morning, eat a big bran-ful breakfast, drink lots of green tea, take our daily muti-vitamins, rarely eat dairy or meat (unless it's fish), and chomp down on lots of leafy greens.

What do you do to stay healthy? Do you have any suggestions for Zach and I? Anything I missed? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Happy Friday! (+ Some Link Love)

My plans for this weekend? Relaxin. These summer weekends are quickly disappearing, so I'm trying to make the most of my last few long, lazy Saturdays. What about you?

Before I go though, I thought I'd share a few links that made me laugh, smile, and think this week:

Thank goodness for modern technology... now we can hear Julia Child sing!

Live in LA? I've got your list of things to do this next month.

Tired of seeing all your friends' babies on Facebook? A solution...

We broke down and decided to buy a TV (but only because Emily Henderson said we could make it look not-ugly.)

After seeing this post, I'm about to go on a shoe-buying binge.

We need some more lighting in our office. I'm totally making these to fix the problem.

Happy weekend, friends! xoxo

FOUND: Shoe Clips

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

I found this sparkly gems at the Rose Bowl Flea Market this weekend... and I can't get enough! I've been clipping them to every pair of shoes I own (and wearing them all week.)

Just thought you'd like to see what I'm putting on my feetsies these days. :)

This or That

The heat has been so brutal this week, Zach and I have been sleeping in the living room at night (next to the air conditioner) to keep cool. And because we're spending so much time in this room, I've found myself daydreaming about changes I want to make.

For instance, I really want to get rid of our chalkboard side table and replace it with something a little more simple... like one of these:

Or, watching Mad Men has convinced me that bar carts are a must. I'm thinking something like:

Then, our little apartment is in need of some extra storage. Fancy dressers could totally add some (and look rad at the same time):

Of course, all this daydreaming comes right after Zach and I readjusted our budget. So, I doubt we'll be making any big purchases anytime soon. (But a girl can dream, right?)

Little Compliments

Monday, August 13, 2012

Last week, someone told me I look like Audrey Hepburn in this pic and I about died with happiness. It reminded me how easy it is to make someone's day. Don't be stingy with those compliments, friends.

Finding Inspiration

Blogs are tricky things. If you're not careful, they can hit a wall - and start to look and sound similar to the other 100 million out there.

If I'm being honest with myself, lately I've been feeling like my blog has collided with that wall. Right now, it's cute and happy and pretty - but so is everyone else's.  So, I've been wondering: does the world really need another blog like this?

It's not that I want to quit blogging, quite the opposite actually. Instead, I've just been challenged to stretch myself a little more. It's easy to get complacent and just keep doing things the way they've always been done.

But I'm not sure how this change will look, exactly. My current quest has been to re-identify what really inspires me (you know, those things that really speak to your soul.) I'm hoping you're patient during my journey (because this blog might start to look and feel a little different...)

On Birthdays

Friday, August 10, 2012

I've always been really into birthdays. I used to start talking about my birthday a month before it happened. And then, I'd throw myself these huge and infamous parties (shark party, anyone?) with lots and lots of people - all celebrating me (because really, when else can the world revolve around you alone?)

But I must be getting old or something, because in the past few years I haven't cared so much. In fact, I've preferred instead to keep things simple. I just want: a morning alone with my husband, my closest friends to remember that it's my birthday, my family to call, and a simple dinner that I don't have to cook. Anything else is an added bonus.

This year, one of my added bonuses was the party I got at my new job. I walked in to a pile of presents, a birthday crown, and a huge cookie with my name on it. (Those girls really know how to make a gal feel special.)

Another bonus is the mini-party I'm having next weekend with my closest friends. It'll be small and simple (again, I don't want to cook.) But, I'm excited to see some old friends that don't get out to Hollywood all that often.

How do you celebrate birthdays? Are you big and bold? Or, do you prefer to keep things simple?

Turning 26 Today

Wednesday, August 8, 2012

In honor of my birthday today (weee!), I thought you'd like to see a few pictures of my birthday parties in younger years.

My mom was always great about making birthdays feel super-special... to the point where I now expect balloons, and cake, and a parade. Poor Zach has his work cut out for him. (Good thing he's up for the challenge.)

Cheers to a fresh new year!

Putting Down Roots (& Painting Our Bedroom)

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

For a while now, Zach and I have been trying to decide whether or not we're going to continue living in West Hollywood. Around our house, the questions have been: Should we move to Marina del Rey to be closer to Zach's work? Should we move east to be in a less-expensive area? Should we move out of Los Angeles altogether (so we can become hippies and raise chickens?)

But this week, we finally made our decision. I got a job at, which is within walking distance from our current apartment. Right now, it just doesn't make sense for us to pick up and leave.

It's amazing how much freedom this decision has given us. Without realizing it, I think we were living in uncomfortable instability. Now, with a solid decision to stay, we can put down roots again and start making plans.

First on the list of to-dos? Painting our bedroom. It's been a boring white for the last year and a half and I'm sick of it. Since we're planning to stay here for a while longer, I can now paint it to my heart's content.

I'm thinkin' I'm gonna do something a little crazy (like Emily Henderson did in her guest bedroom.) Painting on only half the wall seems very chic, but in an unexpected way. And, I think a two-toned wall in a navy blue and white would be a nice contrast to our gold comforter. Right?

WEAR IT // Polka Dots

Monday, August 6, 2012

During our road trip to Vancouver last week, we made an afternoon pit stop in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood.... and Zach and I fell in love. Not only did we pick our our future home (a little loft in the center of the action,) but we also stumbled upon the best Crossroads Trading Co. that I've ever been to. After a solid few hours in the store, I walked away with a full bag of new-to-me goodies.

One of my favorite purchases was this magenta blouse. It was love at first sight - so much so, that I was able to overlook the fact that it was from Forever 21 (my arch nemesis.) I love its retro-vibe. And, the little polka dots give it great texture (even though I'd probably still love it without them.)

Since I got a new job last week (more on that later,) I've been having fun putting together office attire again. This shirt is the perfect addition to my work wardrobe! Because it's still too hot to wear pants, I like layering it with a simple, but high contrast, polka dot skirt.

What are your go-to work appropriate outfits?
