WEAR IT // Big Patterns, Bold Color

Monday, July 9, 2012

For any of you who missed my "Wear It" theme for July, I'll sum it up for you in 2 words: thrift stores.

My goal this month has been to face my fear of secondhand clothing and only purchase things at local thrifting establishments. And, so far I think I've been doing really well. For the 4th of July, my outfit only cost $6 (well, excluding my shoes and earrings... but those were last summer's purchases, so they don't count, right?)

This week, we're coming in around the $20 mark - including earrings, leggings, and shoes (which are technically not "thrifted.") I'm most excited about the awesome blouse though. When I saw it hanging in the "long-sleeved, white knitted shirts" section of Goodwill, it was love at first sight. (I like a piece that stands out in a crowd.) After a little sewing machine TLC, it was ready to become... the perfect summer tunic.

In case you're wondering about my thought process while I picked this outfit:
1) Since the blouse has a big bold pattern, I kept everything else pretty simple. The patterns on the sweater and shoes are small enough to be considered neutrals (in my mind at least.)
2) Tunics look best with leggings or skinny jeans (personal preference.)
3) When I'm wearing a boxy shirt or tunic, I like to add a belt around my waist. I think it makes me look thinner (by defining my waist, I can trick your eye into assuming I have an hourglass shape.)

Have you bought any great thrift store pieces lately?

    1. It's Sephora's brand... I don't know if it has a name, but the tube says "R05." Hope that helps! :)
